One of the main goals of the sociological endeavor of both Pierre Bourdieu and Anthony Giddens was to criticize the false dichotomies, such as structure-agency or society-individual, which have been dominating sociology since its foundation and to develop an alternative theory enabling to transcend these false dichotomies. This chapter uses the distinction to organize the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu, Anthony Giddens and Michel Foucault along a single continuum. Bourdieu’s concepts (field, habitus, capital, practice) illuminate the nonmetric aspects of social reality while missing the metric ones. For Giddens social structures do not reproduce themselves… it is always agents and their practices that reproduce structures, depending on circumstances. After all, ‘structure’ is simply made up of rules (in agents’ heads) and resources, which make action possible (Bourdieu claims it is the habitus which makes this possible).
